The sedimentray history of the Black Hills spans a staggering 542 million years of time in which a series of sweeping, interconnected dramas played out! Great oceans advanced and receded, unimaginably vast deserts spread and dissipated, the continents themselves moved and changed, and huge sheets of ice rolled across the land to the East and West. All of these rich and varied changes are written in the rocks of th Black Hills! There are few places on Earth where so much of this planet's history can be seen in so small a space. In this seminar, you'll begin to read the rocks around you by learning the basics of sedimentary geology and about formations of the Black Hills area. To be planned in class is a day-long field trip across the Hills to visit several formations and groups where your instructor will help you interpret what you see, gathering rock samples for your own collection where law permits. You will not want to miss this opportunity! Note: $5 supply fee paid to instructor. |
